US petfood spending keys on wellness, treats

Overall US pet care spending is projected to grow nearly 5% this year, topping out at US$58.5 billion, according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA). Of that, US petfood spending is expected to reach US$22.62 billion by the end of 2014, after increasing 4.5% in 2013 to a total of US$21.57 billion, APPA said.

According to a Packaged Facts pet shopper survey conducted in January/February 2014, US dog and cat owners are increasingly seeking out petfood products with functional, health-related or nutrition claims.

Urban Resource Institute (URI) and Nestlé Purina PetCare hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate New York City's first-ever dog park in a domestic violence shelter, called the Purina Play Haven and Dog Park. The event marks the official expansion of URIPALS-People and Animals Living Safely-which launched in June 2013 as a pilot program to enable domestic violence survivors to enter shelter with their cats and other small animals.
