Texas-based natural petfood company aims to go national
Austin, Texas-based premium petfood company Nulo has set its sights on becoming a national brand after growing to a regional presence in the last four years, according to reports. One of the US's largest independent petfood distributors will begin handling Nulo in April 2014, a distribution deal that could find the company's petfood on the shelves of 3,600 pet stores nationwide.

WellPet launches superfood, protein-focused products at Global Pet Expo 2014
WellPet, the makers of natural pet food brands Wellness, Old Mother Hubbard, Eagle Pack and Holistic Select, has its focus on two new petfood trends for 2014: superfoods and unique protein pairings. From nutrient-packed superfood ingredients such as kale, pomegranates and sweet potatoes to high-protein recipes featuring multiple protein pairings like turkey & duck and tilapia & ahi tuna, WellPet provides gourmet, natural petfood offerings.

Pet spending estimated at US$58.5 billion for 2014
Overall spending in the pet industry for 2013 came in at an all-time high of more than US$55.7 billion, a 4.5% growth over spending in 2012. In addition, the pet industry is positioned positively once again as the American Pet Products Association (APPA)'s annual comprehensive spending and data report estimates overall spending for 2014 at US$58.51 billion, a 4.9% growth over 2013.

Premium petfood company Blue Buffalo has hired banks for an initial public offering that could come later in 2014, according to sources. The company has selected JPMorgan Chase & Co., Morgan Stanley and Citigroup Inc. to lead the IPO.

Industry newcomer launches with a US-first in petfood packaging
As of press time, Adrian and Pamela Pettyan, co-owners and founders of Caru Pet Food, were on the cusp of their big brand launch at Global Pet Expo in March 2014. "We are encouraged by the responses we have received from consumers to date about both our delicious (as per the dogs, of course) dog food and the unique packaging," says Adrian. "Consumers have told us that their dogs find our food irresistible to eat and they love the ease at which they can store and serve the food, owing to the uniqueness of Tetra Pak containers."

Small pet petfood market growing slowly but steadily
In 2013, US pet owners boasted 116 million fish, birds, small animals and reptiles, according to the 2013 Packaged Facts report, Pet Populations and Pet Owner Trends in the US: Fish, Birds, Reptiles and Small Animals. Fish tanks could be found in 7.2 million homes and bird cages in 4.6 million households. Reptiles lived in 1.8 million US homes, and 2.5 million adults had pet rabbits. Given those numbers, it's clear that the small pet segment has a solid role to play in the overall petfood industry.

Friskies, Grumpy Cat launch Seafood Sensations cat food
Friskies, with the help of "official spokescat" Grumpy Cat (AKA Tardar Sauce), has launched the company's Seafood Sensations line with new shrimp flavor during an event at SXSW in Austin, Texas. As part of the product launch, Friskies (a subsidiary of pet food-maker Purina) agreed to donate a minimum of 25,000 meals to Austin-area shelter cats.

Will "natural"? petfood claims ever be regulated?
When a group of petfood, feed and human food organizations announced their new GMO-related initiative, the Coalition for Safe Affordable Food, in February, nearly lost amid the news was this reason given for forming the coalition and pushing for US federal legislation on GMOs (genetically modified organisms): so the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would define the term "natural" for its use on food and beverage products so human food and beverage companies and consumers have a consistent legal framework for food labels while informing consumer choice.

Mars Japan ranked among Japan's best workplaces
For the second year running, Mars Japan has been ranked among Japan's best workplaces by the consultancy and research company Great Place to Work Institute. Rising nine places since the previous year, Mars Japan is now ranked at number 16.
