Trade show organizer H.H. Backer Associates announced several changes to its annual autumn pet industry show in Chicago. Backer says the show will have new attractions, a fresh graphic look and a new name, Backer's Total Pet Expo.

Petfood is unique in many ways. As an industry, it straddles the consumer packaged goods world as well as the feed industry from which it sprang. Iams petfood brand campaign reminds owners that pets aren't vegetarians
Petfood company Procter & Gamble recently relaunched its Iams ProActive Health premium dry dog and cat food brands. This includes "new marketing messages that remind pet owners that their dogs and cats are not vegetarians," according to Jon Moeller, chief financial officer of P&G.

Petfood Forum highlights positive numbers for petfood market and its future
Among 2,000 pet owners surveyed online in March, 72% agree that their pets have a positive impact on their physical health, and 79% agree their pets have a positive impact on their mental health, according to Packaged Facts. Out of many interesting and impressive numbers emanating from Petfood Forum last week, those data, delivered by David Sprinkle, publisher and research director for Packaged Facts, stood out.

Pet owners' spending on cat, dog food up 62 percent since 2001, report says
Since 2001, pet owners' spending on dog and cat food has grown 62 percent to a record US$19 billion in 2012, according to a report. Euromonitor International estimated petfood spending at US$12.41 billion in 2000, measured in current prices, and says spending grew even in the recession to US$17.7 billion in 2008 and US$18.5 billion in 2009.
