US petfood distribution program ships 200th petfood truckload
Rescue Bank, a nationwide US petfood distribution program for animal rescue groups, recently shipped its 200th truck, delivering 27,000 pounds of dog food, cat food and treats to Angel's Arms, an affiliate in Mobile, Alabama, USA. The petfood shipment allowed Angel's Arms to help local rescuers with several recent puppy mill and hoarder raids, recovering hundreds of pets in dire need of better care and nutrition.

Like other experts and analysts, Euromonitor International is bullish on the global pet industry. "Overall retail growth should be stronger than in 2011, with total sales approaching US$95 billion worldwide in 2012, writes Paula Flores, the firm's new global head of pet care research, in a blog. "This represents a year-on-year constant value gain of 2.5%."

Interzoo, a global exhibition for pet supplies drew 36,792 trade visitors from 111 countries to Nuremberg, Germany, in May to exhibit and learn about the latest petfood and pet products. At Interzoo 2012, 79 percent of the exhibitors came from abroad with a total of 1,539 companies from 53 countries.

Purina Mills launches new small animal food, treat line
Purina Mills LLC is launching a new line of small animal food, Purina Little Wonders Food and Purina Small Animals Treats, in select Walmart stores. These specially formulated diets for gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits provide small animals with wholesome ingredients, like seeds, nuts, vegetables and fruits.

The progressive increase in calcium oxalate uroliths reported in cats diagnosed with urolithiasis may partly be due to changes in nutrition. Since cats have a predominant mitochondrial alanine:glyoxylate aminotransferase 1 (AGT1) location, high carbohydrate intake may induce endogenous oxalate synthesis.

The global corn harvest may set another record this year, with a 9% increase in yield over the 2011 crop, itself a record, according to Dr. Joseph Glauber, chief economist at the US Department of Agriculture. The rise in the global crop is being driven by an almost 20% increase in the US harvest, he said.

What's next for our industry after the latest petfood recalls?
The good news is that no further incidents from the Diamond Pet Foods recalls have come out since the end of May. The bad news, of course, is that the recalls happened at all and especially that people and pets were sickened by Salmonella-contaminated petfoods produced at Diamond's Gaston, South Carolina, USA, plant.
