William Lynn "Bill" Bliss, 79, founder of Bliss Industries Inc., died February 13, 2014, at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA. Bliss founded Bliss Industries in 1979 with his sons after he designed his own hammermill, which he called the Eliminator.

2014 IPPE a success in spite of inclement weather
The 2014 International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) was successful despite inclement weather conditions that impacted drive-in traffic. IPPE recorded 24,865 registrants, though advanced registration and hotel reservations had projected attendance to be more than 28,000 registrants.

Partner in Pet Food sees sales up 6% in 2013
European petfood producer Partner in Pet Food (PPF) has released its 2013 financials, showing a 6 % rise in annual sales during the year. Total sales came in at €225 million (US$308 million), with a total product volume of 400,000 tons.

Consumer trends: buying petfood online
When asked to give buzzwords to describe trends in the petfood and treat market, many people—regardless if they are industry experts or pet parents—would answer with words found on many petfood packages: natural, organic, corn-free and human-grade. The private equity community has developed a modest fascination with the pet industry over the past five years. Interest has accelerated markedly since 2007, as evidenced by deal volume. Notably, deal volume grew from 2009–2010 in contrast to the broader consumer marketplace which contracted. 2011 is off to a strong start for the industry, with five announced deals in January to-date.

Update: ingredient sourcing and traceability
A provision of the federal Food Safety Modernization Act (S. 510) recently signed in to law requires that all players in the US petfood supply chain be able to quickly trace from whom they received an ingredient and to whom they sent it. Petfood manufacturers will have to maintain that information in digital form which means consumers could tap into this information through their computers or smartphones.

The proportion of value sales accounted for by private label in the US$61.9 billion global petfood market (2010) stood at 11.6% in 2009, up by just 10 basis points since 2004. However, this stable global market share belies significant inter- and intra-regional variations. Global market share may be stable, but it masks a much more complex regional picture.
