Brazil looks beyond pet food volume to new eating occasions

A new growth strategy for Brazil’s pet food industry centers not only on how much pets consume, but also on the different occasions that motivate owners to spend.

Brazil's pet food industry is shifting toward premium treats, functional snacks and specialized nutrition products that create new spending occasions for pet owners. Companies like Pet Nutrition are expanding manufacturing capacity to capitalize on value-added categories that combine indulgence, emotional engagement and wellness benefits beyond traditional pet food consumption.

  • Pet Nutrition, part of Brazilian pharmaceutical group Biolab & Co., is constructing a 30,000-square-meter facility in São Paulo to expand production capacity beyond its current 300 metric tons.
  • Brazilian manufacturers are consolidating growth through treats, rewards and functional snacks that generate incremental spending beyond conventional pet food.
  • Pet Nutrition's portfolio includes the Vie line of natural treats and Doctor Paws chewable supplements targeting specific wellness needs.
  • Product differentiation now centers on culinary inspiration and functional ingredients like DHA, glutamine and collagen, mimicking human food products.
  • Brazil's pet food industry is evolving toward premiumization and product specialization rather than competing exclusively on volume and price.

Pet food in Brazil is increasingly exploring growth opportunities beyond traditional food volumes. As manufacturers expand into treats, functional snacks and specialized nutrition, the industry is consolidating a growth strategy centered not only on how much pets consume, but also on the different occasions that motivate owners to spend.

A recent example is Pet Nutrition, part of Brazilian pharmaceutical group Biolab & Co., which announced the construction of a 30,000-square-meter manufacturing facility in Pirassununga, São Paulo, in August 2026. The expansion highlights the growing importance of treats, indulgence and functional products as sources of value beyond traditional pet food consumption.

According to Biolab & Co., the new facility will significantly expand Pet Nutrition’s current production capacity of 300 metric tons. The company did not specify the measurement period or disclose the facility’s projected capacity.

The investment is particularly relevant because Pet Nutrition specializes in natural and functional treats rather than conventional dry pet food. Its business model also includes private-label manufacturing for major Brazilian retailers.

From feeding needs to consumption occasions

Treats, rewards and functional snacks are consolidating consumption occasions that generate incremental spending beyond conventional pet food, combining indulgence, emotional engagement and wellness benefits.

Pet Nutrition’s portfolio reflects this shift toward value-added consumption occasions, from indulgence and rewards to functional nutrition. Its Vie line focuses on natural treats, while Doctor Paws, developed alongside Avert, targets specific wellness needs through chewable supplements. Both illustrate how manufacturers are consolidating opportunities beyond conventional pet food consumption.

Brazil’s value-added opportunity

Pet Nutrition’s expansion reflects a broader transformation in Brazil’s pet food market, where manufacturers are increasingly consolidating value-added categories and differentiated consumption occasions.

The company’s Vie portfolio illustrates this approach through products inspired by human eating occasions, including breakfast snacks with banana, oats and honey; duck with orange and lamb with mint and sweet potato; and evening formulations featuring passion fruit, valerian and lemon balm. Selected recipes also incorporate DHA, glutamine and collagen, combining culinary differentiation with functional ingredients.

Brazil’s pet food industry is evolving beyond traditional volume-driven growth, with premiumization, product specialization and differentiated consumption occasions playing an increasingly important role in value creation.

Pet Nutrition’s investment illustrates this transition. Rather than competing exclusively through kilograms of complete pet food, manufacturers are expanding into categories where product formulation, functionality and specific consumption occasions become central elements of competitive differentiation.
