Jerky treat pet deaths still under investigation
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is still investigating the illnesses and deaths of several hundred dogs that began in 2007 and are suspected to be the result of contaminated chicken jerky pet treats manufactured in China. The FDA continues to seek leads from veterinarians and pet owners-roughly 1,500 reports have some in since an appeal for information in the fall of 2013.

There have been no reports of illness related to this product to date, according to the company, and the recall is being issued out of an abundance of caution after routine testing by the US Food and Drug Administration's Detroit District Office identified possible Salmonella contamination.

AVMA won't warn against feeding treats tied to illness, deaths
Despite reports of pet illness and deaths tied to jerky treats, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) says it won’t warn pet owners against feeding the treats to their dogs, according to an NBC News report. The AVMA rejected a resolution this month that would have discouraged use of the jerky products until further evidence about safety is available.

The US Food an Drug Administration (FDA)'s release this week of an update on the investigation into illnesses related to chicken jerky pet treats really blew up on the Internet and social media.
