Raw petfood: Is it safe enough?
The discussions both for and against a raw petfood diet are long-familiar to the industry. Proponents cite unmatched health benefits for pets and the way the diet simulates how animals would eat in the wild; while detractors point out the risk of pet illness, contamination and public health issues if proper food safety measures aren't taken.

FDA to investigate Salmonella in petfood
As the moderator for the sessions on petfood safety at the 2013 Petfood Forum, I can say without fear of contradiction that Salmonella control was a very hot topic. Multiple speakers addressed the subject, and the information conveyed to the manufacturers in the audience was indeed timely.

Consumer call for pet retailers to post petfood, treat recall warning signs
After a number of voluntary recalls of chicken jerky pet treats made in China, pet owners are asking retailers for accountability in warning consumers of products recalled or thought to be potentially harmful by the Food and Drug Administration. FSMA means ‘seismic shift’ in food and petfood safety
Ever since the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed into law in January 2011, we have heard that it represents the most significant change to US food safety law for decades, or variations on that theme. I’ve seen descriptions ranging from “fundamental overhaul” to “historic revolution.” For the petfood industry, one reason FSMA signals such a substantial change is that for the first time, many food safety regulations and practices that have been required of human food will now also apply to animal feed (including petfood).
