Vegan petfood increases in popularity

Owners are starting to favor vegan diets for their pets, believing that it is healthier for them and sales are reflecting the increasing popularity of the trend.

Eric Weisman, CEO of  vegan petfood company Evolution Diet , says his sales have increased 20% in the past year, despite the recession and the high cost of his food, according to the  Colombia News Service .

However, veterinarians argue that forcing animals that naturally hunt to give up meat as a main source of protein is unhealthy and impractical.

Wellness  company veterinarian Al Townshend insists that a meatless diet for meat-eating animals is not only difficult for humans to properly maintain, but may be dangerous because it relies on a diet of grains and carbohydrates, which is unnatural and can deprive animals of necessary nutrients.
