South Dakota State University to study Salmonella testing in raw petfood
Through a five-year US Food and Drug Administration grant for nearly $500,000, South Dakota State University Senior Microbiologist Seema Das aims to determine whether a test that detects Salmonella in human food can do the same in raw petfood. The first year the test will be validated, and then either adjustments or expansion of the testing will be done in subsequent years.

William Lynn "Bill" Bliss, 79, founder of Bliss Industries Inc., died February 13, 2014, at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA. Bliss founded Bliss Industries in 1979 with his sons after he designed his own hammermill, which he called the Eliminator.

Food & Water Watch has delivered a petition on behalf of “animal parents” to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) against pet treats and food made in China. It wants the agency to implement Section 211 of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) that would inform consumers about the dangers of these treats.

AFIA supports AMS/FDA animal feed export certification program
The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) has said that it is pleased with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)'s new agreement that designates USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) as the authority to certify animal feed and petfood products for export to foreign countries. "The agreement is a result of AFIA's efforts to inform USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service about several issues that industry has had exporting to various markets, such as Brazil's requirement for Good Manufacturing Practice certifications and products under the implementation of China's AQSIQ Decree 118," said Gina Tumbarello, AFIA manager of international trade.
