One question we regularly get from product developers is whether their product is regulated and if so, how is it regulated? Pet food products are subject to different standards depending on the use, marketing and function of the product (cumulatively these elements are known as the “intended use”). As you consider your next product launch, you need to know your product’s intended use as it determines the regulatory category and applicable standards. It is important also for manufacturers and retailers to ensure that their product is categorized and marketed correctly in order to avoid allegations of misbranding or adulteration. Furthermore, it is important to know the parameters of these categories so you can properly differentiate your products to consumers to ensure that they are purchasing the right products for their pets.
