Five new highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza cases have been confirmed in Iowa poultry flocks. The latest cases in Iowa, announced on May 11 by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), involved both layer flocks and turkey flocks.
USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories have confirmed highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza in the following counties:
- Sioux County, Iowa -- 100,000 chickens, ninth detection in the county
- Sioux County, Iowa -- 581,300 chickens, tenth detection in the county
- Pocahontas County, Iowa -- 32,900 turkeys, second detection in the county
- Cherokee County, Iowa -- 45,000 turkeys, fourth detection in this county
- Wright County, Iowa – Chickens, number pending, second detection in the county
The affected premises have been quarantined, and birds on the property will be depopulated to help prevent the spread of the highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza.
The most recent round of avian influenza cases in Iowa involve fewer birds than many of the previously announced outbreaks, some of which have involved beyond 1 million birds.
