Chewy Health has committed $1 million toward the development of an applied learning center for veterinary students, part of Clay County, Florida’s forthcoming animal services building in Middleburg. The funding, made in partnership with Lincoln Memorial University (LMU), will support hands-on training in shelter medicine, clinical procedures, and animal handling for students from LMU’s College of Veterinary Medicine at Orange Park.
The Chewy Health & Lincoln Memorial University Applied Learning Center will operate within the new shelter as a space for real-world learning during students' pre-clinical semesters. In addition to its educational use, the room may also host community programming.
“The Chewy Health & LMU Applied Learning Center is a powerful example of what’s possible when education, innovation and community come together,” said Mita Malhotra, President of Chewy Health. “This pledge reflects our belief that investing in future veterinary leaders strengthens not just the profession, but also the wellbeing of the pets and communities they serve.”
Kim Carney, Dean of LMU–College of Veterinary Medicine at Orange Park, emphasized the dual value of the center, saying it will “give our students valuable hands-on experience early in their training, while also supporting the vital work happening every day at Clay County Animal Services.”
The shelter is expected to open in 2026. Its expanded capacity will enable more advanced veterinary procedures for shelter animals and enhance local animal care capabilities. Chewy’s involvement reflects the company’s broader interest in strengthening veterinary infrastructure and education, particularly through community-based initiatives.
