Earthborn Holistic Pet Food has reached significant milestones in two long-running sustainability programs, according to Brandi Kramer, marketing manager at Midwestern Pet Foods.
Through its UPCs for Trees program, launched in 2009 in partnership with Trees for the Future, the brand has planted more than 1 million trees in deforested areas worldwide. Customers collect UPCs from empty product bags and return them to participating retailers or mail them to a designated collection site. Each returned UPC results in one tree planted.
"Since 2009, we've planted over one million trees through our program and helped put over 4,000 people on the pathway out of hunger and poverty," Kramer said.
All Earthborn Holistic dog and cat food packaging is made with 25% recycled material, using the ISCC mass balance approach to track material flow and support progress toward a circular economy.
Through a separate partnership with TerraCycle, the brand's Earthborn ReBorn Program allows consumers to drop off empty pet food and treat bags at participating retailers for recycling and upcycling at no cost to the consumer. The program has reached 2 million bags recycled, the equivalent of keeping 206,772 lbs. of waste out of landfills.
