Pet food ingredient supplier SARVAL has reopened its modernized wet pet food production site in Cuijk, Netherlands, following a major upgrade which the company said is aimed at boosting operational efficiency, product quality and environmental performance.

The updated facility features a fully automated crane system, robotic palletizers and improved pumping technologies to streamline handling and production. Freezing capacity has increased from 500 to 800 metric tons per week, which the company noted allows it to respond more quickly to customer needs and maintain consistency.

"We are incredibly proud of the investments made in Cuijk," said Liudvikas Morkunas, managing director. "By leveraging automation and innovative technologies, we’re positioning ourselves as the partner of choice for the global pet food industry. Our mission for sustainable production supports our customers in advancing their own sustainability goals. By co-developing single ingredients and custom blends tailored to specific requirements, we deliver on a truly customer-centric approach with an essentially on-demand product offering."

Sustainability played a central role in the redesign. The plant now uses CO₂-based plate freezers instead of ammonia, enabling lower operating temperatures and reduced energy consumption. Energy-efficient compressors and future energy recovery systems — expected in 2026 — are intended to further reduce the plant’s environmental footprint by repurposing freezer-generated energy to heat cleaning water. These efforts qualified the site for a government energy savings subsidy.

In addition to physical upgrades, SARVAL has launched a dedicated wet pet food business unit to enhance customer collaboration. This new unit will work with pet food manufacturers across Europe and North America to provide customized ingredient solutions and improved support.

The Cuijk site improvements are designed to reflect SARVAL’s strategic focus on long-term value creation for its pet food partners through automation, quality control and sustainable practices.
