Improving the juiciness of petfood chunks and pouches with plasma
Juiciness is the ability of meat to release juice (defined as the quantity of water preserved after cooking) when a pet chews it. Most of the juiciness in meat is actually water, but the sensation of juiciness happens two ways: The first corresponds to the quantity of juice that is released into the mouth when the meat is first chewed, and the secondary perception of juiciness is due to salivary flow stimulated by the presence of fat in the mouth.

Market trends: Petfood enhancers
Niche sections of the petfood market are nothing new. Fresh petfood, refrigerated/frozen petfood and dehydrated petfood are all members of the niche pet market and are starting to gain enough popularity to be included in annual retail reports and breakdowns of market data. The petfood enhancers category, however, is just now starting to make waves with more products than ever finding pet store shelves and enticing pet owners with human food flavors, human-animal bonding and unique ways to add extra nutrition to a pet’s diet.

Alternative protein sources for petfood: are insects the answer?
Increasing humanization of pets around the world -- even in China, a small (but rapidly growing) pet market, 90% of pet owners say their pets are part of the family, according to Mars Petcare China -- means rising numbers of pet owners who want and expect to feed their pets products similar to the types of food products they're seeking for themselves. When it comes to protein sources, that translates to seeking "human grade" meats, poultry or fish and shunning any ingredients perceived as lesser quality, such as meat or poultry by-products or meals. Petfood manufacturers have understandably responded to these consumer demands. So everyone should be happy, right?
