Dynamics of the Brazilian pet food market

In 2025, Petfood Industry expanded coverage in Latin America with Petfood Forum Brasil. The news portal publishes exclusive articles and a weekly newsletter for professionals in the Brazilian pet food sector.

In 2024, Brazil saw the highest export numbers for the pet sector since record-keeping began in 2014, reported Juliana Stern for Petfood Forum Brasil. Pet food accounted for over 80% of the total. On the import side, high tax burdens have led to decreased domestic production, boosting demand for foreign products. Brazil’s pet sector has broken export records. In 2024, pet-related exports reached $580.6 million, the highest figure since data collection began in 2014. Compared to 2023, this represents a 29.7% increase. This growth was driven primarily by exports of pet food. Pet food and treats accounted for 86% of Brazil’s total pet exports, totaling nearly $500 million.

The data came from ComexStat and was compiled and released exclusively to Pet Food Forum Brazil by the Brazilian Association of the Pet Products Industry (Abinpet), in partnership with the Pet Brazil Institute (IPB).

In 2024, the leading importers of Brazilian pet products were Colombia, Uruguay, the United Arab Emirates, Bolivia and Chile. Although not one of the main export markets for Brazilian pet food, U.S. trade grabbed headlines more recently.

U.S. import tariffs on Brazilian pet food products took effect August 6, 2025, representing an escalation in trade restrictions that could impact Brazilian pet food companies entering the North American market.

The tariff increase affects dog and cat food imports from Brazil, which previously faced an average 10% duty rate depending on product type and origin. Under the new directive, these products now carry a 50% tariff, plus Value Added Tax (VAT).

Chilean pet food market

Speaking of U.S. trade, dog and cat food exports from the United States to Chile have nearly tripled since 2015, from US$13 million to more than US$36 million in 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). The agency forecast that retail sales of dog food in Chile will increase 29% to more than US$1 billion annually by 2027. Cat food sales were projected to rise 45% to more than US$600 million annually.
