Wild Earth, maker of plant-based pet food, announced its first-ever nutritionally complete vegan wet cat food, Unicorn Pate.
According to the company, vegan cat food products have strong data supporting improved health outcomes versus meat-based diets. Based on Professor Knight's published Research, cats on nutritionally complete vegan diets versus meat-based diets were 7.3% less likely to visit a vet with unusual frequency, indicating treatment for illness, and 14.9% less likely be on medication.
“The pooled evidence to date from our study, and from others in this field, indicate that cats fed nutritionally sound vegan diets are healthier overall, than those fed meat-based diets," noted Professor Knight in the study.
According to Wild Earth, this adds to additional studies that support plant-based diets for all of pets, including dogs, in which they lived on average 1.5 years longer than dogs on conventional meat based kibble diets, had fewer vet visits, and had fewer serious illnesses.
Wild Earth said plant-based diets historically have been the domain of veterinarians who have prescribed plant-based and hydrolyzed diets for dogs and cats with food allergies (commonly chicken allergies). The company said its mission is to put plant-based diets as a first choice for consumers versus the last choice when pets have struggled with other meat-based diets.
“Our team is incredibly proud to launch a new category leader that we hope will catalyze change in the entire pet food industry," said Ryan Bethencourt, CEO. "Nutritionally complete vegan cat food has been a long time coming and we’re very thankful to be able to launch a whole new category of products which we think will transform both Cat Nutrition and help make space for a kinder world for all animals.
The launch of Unicorn Pate helps accelerate a whole new category of vegan cat food products, representing a huge step forward in Wild Earth's mission to transform the pet food industry for pets, other animals and the planet, added Bethencourt.
"Today our pets account for 25% to 30% of the meat we consume in the U.S.," he said. "With Wild Earth’s industry leading vegan dog and cat products we can transform both their health with plant-based diets and their global pawprint!”
According to Petfood Industry's company directory, Wild Earth has been making plant-based dog food, treats and supplements since 2017. Its products are designed to be cruelty-free, nutritious and provide wellness benefits for dogs. Wild Earth's food is made with sustainable plant proteins, like chickpeas, oats, spinach, pumpkin, and sweet potato, and contains no fillers. The company also offer supplements for hips, joints, skin and coat.
