Aflatoxin concerns in pet food: What are the options?

Recent pet food recalls due to aflatoxin contamination are another warning that this naturally occurring mold toxin is a food safety issue for the industry.

Pet food aflatoxin contamination has been a recurring issue. It seems to be more prevalent in 2020–2021 than in past years, but the problem dates back decades. With climate change and shifting growth patterns for crops, it may become even more of an issue in the future. That these recalls continue to occur is not necessarily an indictment of the pet food companies involved or the cereals being used; rather, it is illustrative of the challenge associated with these toxins.
