Scientists with Mérieux NutriSciences will discuss the increasing risks to ingredients as they are sourced more globally in a world experiencing climate changes and weather extremes.
These risks, both microbiological and chemical, can be found throughout the food system, especially when the ingredients are under abusive conditions of heat, moisture and contact, which create high risk from microorganisms. Understanding and monitoring the risks helps to establish a safe ingredient supply.
A director from Sher Consulting and Training will describe the 2015 ISO 9001 quality standard and how it requires a documented risk and opportunity assessment, which many organizations are confused by and are having difficulty implementing.
He will present an approach that demonstrates integration of HACCP into the new ISO requirements using a simple step-by-step method. This can result in an effective, integrated management system that simultaneously fulfills the requirements of HACCP (or FSSC 22000), the Food Safety Modernization Act and ISO 9001:2015.
A consumer packaging expert from Sonoco will describe a case study using modeling software to quickly estimate the shelf life of moisture-sensitive pet food products. The study determined the moisture sorption/loss of three cat treat products and included a review of typical pet food packages found in the marketplace, demonstrating their impact on shelf life.
Adams will share the correlation between predicted and actual shelf life, as the software was shown to simulate physical shelf life testing for a variety of package formats, barrier materials and storage conditions, allowing for quick evaluation of tradeoffs.
A Burdock Group scientist will discuss significant changes to the information needed to notify the US Food and Drug Administration of a conclusion of generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status for a new pet food ingredient. He will explain how to plan for strategic research and development of a potential new ingredient, as well as the critical portions of a dossier explaining the safety information supporting GRAS status.
Lawyers and researchers from Husch Blackwell will offer information to help pet food manufacturers and ingredient suppliers prepare for contamination events and recalls under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). They will cover best practices in documentation that can help defend against litigation and how to best develop FSMA-compliant programs and address allocation of risk along the supply chain.
In addition, the speakers will unlock the mysteries of potential insurance coverage available to address contamination events and provide the latest news regarding FSMA rules and enforcement.
