Snellman Group has announced plans to construct a pet food factory in Pedersöre, Finland, addressing what it said is the rising demand for raw dog and cat food. The company noted the new factory will feature modern production technologies and energy-efficient systems, such as heat exchangers that reuse excess heat from food freezing to warm water and office spaces. Spiral freezers will allow products to be frozen within an hour, ensuring optimal quality.

An application for an environmental and building permit for the pet food factory was submitted to the municipality of Pedersöre in early March 2025.

“We want to respond to the growing demand for raw foods that promote the well-being of dogs and cats," said Magnus Pettersson, director, Snellman Petfood business unit. "The new factory would be a significant step in implementing the growth strategy of Snellman’s pet food business and for our commitment to natural raw pet food and the well-being of pets. It would enable larger scale production of raw pet food."

The raw pet food division of Snellman Group, part of the company since 2011, is the largest producer of raw pet food in the Nordic region. The division’s MUSH brand is available across Finland, Sweden, Norway, and select European markets, including Germany. Pet owners’ growing preference for natural pet food continues to drive the raw pet food segment’s rapid expansion.

"The pet food market and the raw pet food segment in particular has grown rapidly in recent years," said Pettersson. "We expect this trend to continue. Pet owners have a growing desire to provide their pets with natural food, as experience has proven that the natural food is the most fitting choice. The new factory enables us to increase the exports of our products, which would strengthen our position especially in the Nordic countries, but also in the growing international markets."

Once complete, the new facility will enhance Snellman’s ability to meet this demand and expand its international exports, solidifying its position in Nordic and global markets. Pending permit approval, construction on the facility is set to begin next summer.
