Diverse pet food market growth in Western, Eastern Europe

Although still a large, valuable market, volume growth stagnated or declined in the mature pet food markets of Western Europe between 2012 and 2017. However, the value of the market grew, noted Euromonitor analysts. Price increases, premiumizaton and other retail value factors drove much of that value growth.

While Italy saw the most pet food sales growth in the region (2.45 percent), the UK, France and Germany grew by less than one percent. Meanwhile, pet food sales in the Netherlands dropped by 0.70 percent, according to Mordor Intelligence data.

Top Eastern European pet food markets

These Western European nations achieved the highest pet food retail sales as a percentage of the regional total. Russia’s retail pet food sales alone made up more than half. The infographic below contains more details.

  2. Poland
  3. Czech Republic
  4. Hungary

Eastern Europe’s estimated pet food sales volume may reach 1.642 million metric tons in 2017, according to Euromonitor’s analysts.

In Eastern Europe, both retail volume and value grew between 2012 and 2017. A growing pet population, an increase in the demand for prepared pet foods and economic recovery all play roles in Eastern Europe’s pet food market growth.
