Woof Whiskers analysts reviewed the prices and bag sizes of more than 1,300 dry dog foods sold on Chewy.com. The dog foods represented 111 different brands. Woof Whiskers’ team found a wide range of prices and noted that cost per pound largely correlated to bag size and formulation.

Overall, a bag of dog food cost an average US$49.49, considering all sizes and formulations. The least expensive bag cost US$5.48, while the most expensive cost US$120.99. However, these disparate prices reflected bag size and variety.
The least expensive bag was 4.5 pounds of Purina Moist and Meaty. The most costly was a 32-pound bag of Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Skin Support dry dog food.
Price per pound of dog food of Chewy.com
To allow comparison between dog food bag sizes and formulation, Woof Whiskers’ team found the price per pound of the dog foods on Chewy.com. For example, the aforementioned least and most expensive bags worked out to US$1.24 per pound and US$3.78 per pound respectively. The average price per pound of the dog foods was US$2.19 for the more than 1,300 varieties examined by Woof Whiskers.
Least expensive dog food by price/pound on Chewy: US$0.46 - Kibbles ‘n Bits Original at US$22.99 for a 50-pound bag
Woof Whiskers found more than 20 dog foods costing 75 cents or less per pound. The brands predominated budget-priced dog food offerings: Kibbles ‘n Bits, Dog Chow and Alpo. More than one dog food formula from each of these brands was in the top 10 least expensive dog foods.
Most expensive dog food by price/pound on Chewy: US$12.80 per pound - Addiction Nutri-RX Allergy-HS Ultra-Hypoallergenic dry dog food at US$28.15 for a 2.2-pound bag.
Royal Canin products were the most expensive on a price per pound basis.
“This can be explained for a few reasons, the first of which is they make small bag sizes that many other manufacturers don’t,” wrote Woof Whiskers analysts on their website. “Their Dachshund Puppy Dry Dog food is the most expensive, costing $18.89 for just 2.5 lbs of food which gives it a $7.56 price per pound!
“Royal Canin is also one of the few brands that offers prescription dog foods which tend to be more expensive as we mentioned early. Overall, Royal Canin made up 18 of the 20 most expensive dog foods in our list, mostly due to small bag sizes.”
Across all dog food brands, larger bags were in general more economically efficient than smaller bags on a price per pound basis.
