The Northern Crops Institute has completed extensive renovations to its Feed Production Center, significantly expanding its capabilities for education and technical assistance in feed manufacturing.
The renovated facility, located at North Dakota State University, now features doubled educational and laboratory space, expanded storage areas, modernized equipment and new processing capabilities.
"These upgrades allow us to serve our partners more effectively by offering state-of-the-art training facilities, improved production capacity, and expanded research capabilities," said David Boehm, NCI director. "We are proud to continue our mission of advancing feed manufacturing technology and supporting the success of the agricultural industry in our region and beyond."
Established in 1990, the Feed Production Center provides hands-on training for domestic and international clients while producing feed for NDSU's animal research units and supporting agricultural research across Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.
Key improvements include the replacement of a 1950s-era pelleting line with modern equipment, installation of exterior storage bins that double ingredient capacity, and the addition of a dedicated extrusion area housing an Insta-Pro high shear dry extruder.
The facility can produce 60 tons of meal feed or 24 tons of pelleted feed daily and is equipped with advanced manufacturing tools including an I-Controls automation system, Bliss hammermill, and California Pellet Mill.
NCI celebrated the renovation completion with a private open house where guests toured the updated facility and learned about new opportunities for training, research and collaboration. During the event, NCI recognized Dr. Kim Koch, former NCI senior food scientist and feed mill manager, for his leadership in developing the center.
Boehm noted the expansion comes at an important time, as "animal agriculture and biofuel co-products are increasing" in the region.
