There are several petfoods on the market that contain clay minerals such as montmorillonite and bentonite. Inclusion of these earth elements at small amounts are purported to benefit our pets. However, their addition has also led to some confusion and controversy amongst the petfood-buying public. This begs the question … are foods containing these ingredients a good idea?
Clays are a big part of the products in our everyday life; from ceramic plates for our evening meal to bricks for our homes and offices, to specialty clay minerals used in paper processing and water filtration systems. We use clay minerals in topical salves and cosmetics and, of course, clays are the leading litter box absorbents in the pet aisle.
