NRGene Canada has commercially launched MaxBites, an all-natural pet treat made from 100% dried Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, marking the company's entry into the North American pet nutrition market.

The single-ingredient treat — derived from Hermetia illucens — is non-GMO and contains no additives or artificial fillers. NRGene Canada said its proprietary BSF production process yields a nutritional profile of 41% protein and 38% fat, along with calcium and lauric acid. Black Soldier Fly ingredients are approved for use in animal feed in Canada.

MaxBites is currently available in 0.25 kg to 2 kg formats at select pet and feed retailers across Canada and through maxbsf.com. A phased U.S. expansion is planned for the second half of 2026.

The launch follows a pilot program conducted with pet owners at farms across Canada, which the company said demonstrated uptake across multiple species, including avian and specialty pets.

NRGene Canada noted the global pet food and treats market is projected to reach US$247.7 billion by 2035, with North America identified as the largest and fastest-growing region, according to a February 2026 report from Future Market Insights. The BSF sector is separately projected to reach $5.6 billion by 2035, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of 29% from 2025 to 2035, with the pet food segment cited as the fastest-growing application, according to Meticulous Research.

MaxBites is produced using upcycled agricultural byproducts. The company said the product requires less land and water than traditional protein sources such as soy or livestock.

"MaxBites marks our entry into a high-value, fast-growing category where no clear leader has yet emerged," said Yossi Levi, chief business officer of NRGene Canada. "This launch is a direct extension of our core production capabilities, and we believe the market opportunity ahead of us is substantial."

The company said MaxBites is the first product in a planned pipeline of functional pet nutrition offerings as it works to establish a brand presence in the specialty pet sector.
