One newcomer to the pet food industry gained professional connections and learned new technical skills at Petfood Forum (see video below). With only four months’ experience, Steve Goll, Ph.D., director of research and development for Tyson Foods, was fairly new to the pet food industry in 2019, after moving from human food in search of a new challenge. While Tyson Food is best known as a human food and pet food ingredient supplier, the company does produce and market pet treats. Goll came to Petfood Forum to learn about his new career path. As a pet newby, Goll said he had a steep learning curve. He said he appreciated the opportunity to meet and work with a cross-functional group from around the world.

There’s a saying, “you’re either networking or not working,” he said. “So, I'm establishing a very robust network.”

He’s also picked up technical skills along the way, he said.

“I'm a leader for a group of scientists that develop new products and so I'm going to challenge them as well as myself to take these learnings and implement those whether it be the consumer perceptions technical skills, the analytical aspects

of developing formulas,” he said. “Encouraging them to take these skills and this knowledge and implement that in our everyday activities.”
