Sonoco, a global packaging company, has joined the Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC) to support sustainability efforts in the pet care industry. The company said this move highlights its commitment to environmentally friendly practices and aligns with PSC’s mission to improve sustainability across the global pet sector.

As a new PSC member, Sonoco will collaborate with nearly 200 companies in the pet industry supply chain to promote sustainability initiatives. PSC, founded in 2013, focuses on reducing the environmental impact of pet care products while fostering social responsibility.

"We are thrilled to welcome Sonoco to the Pet Sustainability Coalition," said Allison Reser, director of Sustainability & Innovation at PSC. "Packaging suppliers play a critical role in the pet industry, and we need companies like Sonoco to drive innovation and sustainability in pet care and food packaging. Partnerships and a willingness to collaborate are invaluable to create a future where the health of our pets and the planet are in harmony.”

Sonoco offers a wide range of packaging solutions, including flexible, metal, thermoformed and rigid paper containers, designed to meet the diverse needs of the pet care market. Its U.S. portfolio includes EnviroCan, a recyclable and resealable paperboard container that ensures product freshness and durability, particularly for premium dry pet food and treats.

In Europe, Sonoco focuses on metal and rigid paper containers, while also offering flexible packaging options that include recycled content and are recyclable through store drop-off programs or curbside paper streams. The company’s metal packaging solutions are used to preserve wet pet food, maintaining its quality and freshness.

Beyond packaging, Sonoco’s commitment to pets extends to community welfare. Through the Sonoco Foundation, the company partners with the Darlington County Humane Society to support animal welfare and education in its hometown of Hartsville, South Carolina.

“At Sonoco, our commitment to pets extends beyond innovation; it encompasses a genuine passion for progress in animal welfare,” said Ernest Haynes, president of Sonoco Metal Packaging Division. “Through this new partnership with the PSC, Sonoco reaffirms its promise to deliver not only superior packaging solutions but also to contribute positively to the global sustainability effort.”
