In 2022, rising standards of living and changing attitudes towards pets in Latin America and Asia may have fueled the fastest pet food sales volume growth worldwide. Andrea Binder, client director of the retail pet channel for NielsenIQ, shared global pet food sales data during her presentation at Global Pet Expo on March 22 in Orlando, Florida, USA.
“In dog and cat food, North America, thinking of the US and Canada, and Europe are really the drivers of that volume,” Binder said. “Growth has been pretty stable, if not declining in Europe over the last year. When we look at where the growth is coming from, although on a smaller scale, we see Asia and Latin Am especially driving some of the growth in the pet food space.”
Collectively, European nations accounted for the highest volume of pet food sold in 2022, followed closely by the United States and Canada. However, sales volume growth was slow in the United States and Canada, while Europe declined slightly.
Meanwhile, Latin America had the highest growth rate, although sales volume was still far smaller than in Europe or the Anglophonic nations of North America. Likewise, Asia saw stronger growth than the larger markets, while still dwarfed by those markets in size.
Pet food sales volume growth by region
Latin American pet food volume increased by 4.8% in 2022 to reach 866 million equivalent units. Asian pet food sales volume hit 186 million equivalent units, growing 2.9%.
Combined European pet food markets stood at 5.7 billion equivalent units in 2022, but declined 0.7% from 2021. In the United States and Canada, pet food sales volume was only slightly smaller than in Europe at 5.6 billion equivalent units after growing 0.3%.
Africa’s pet food market was the smallest in the world at 114 million equivalent units, while also declining in volume by 4.5%.
