Italy, Spain top reptile ownership in Europe 2018

Italy, Spain and Germany held the largest populations of reptile pets in Europe in 2018.

The European Pet Food Federation (FEDIAF) estimated the European population of reptile pets, both native and exotic, in 2018. The agency published that data in the report “FEDIAF Facts & Figures 2018.” The report presented the European populations of pet dogs, cats and other pets along with other data on EU member and other European pet food markets, along with Turkey.

Two warm countries, Italy and Spain, led the list, although chillier Germany took third place in terms of overall population of reptile pets.

  5. Russia - 900,000
  6. United Kingdom - 900,000
  7. Switzerland - 370,000
  8. Netherlands - 310,000

  10. Turkey - 180,000

Top 10 per capita reptile ownership in Europe 2018

While Spain and Italy remained in the top three, Switzerland was home to the highest per capita population of reptile pets in Europe in 2018.

The per capita population of cats in each nation was estimated by dividing the cat population from the FEDIAF report by the approximate human population of each country in 2018. Human population data was taken from Worldometer.info, which elaborated the numbers using United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Population Division figures.
