Sales of pet products on Amazon grew by 31 percent in the first half of 2018, compared to the first half of 2017, according to data from One Click Retail in the report “Amazon Q2 Update: Pet Products.” Online pet food and feeding supplies sales reached more than US$360 million in the first two quarters of 2018 on Amazon. That represents an increase of 34 percent year over year. Overall pet products sales hit US$780 million on Amazon in that time period.

“On Amazon, the pet food category makes up nearly half of total pet product sales – in the total domestic market, food makes up approximately two-thirds of the sector,” wrote One Click Retail’s analysts. “As an aside, it's worth noting that the discrepancy between these shares might suggest that Amazon's Pet Food sales are likely to experience a lot more growth before leveling off.”

Top selling pet foods on Amazon

The convenience of home delivery likely contributes to the popularity of pet food sales on Amazon, since home delivery means the postal worker does most of the heavy lifting to get a big bad of kibble to the front door. Because of this, 30-pound bags of dry dog food remain the biggest hit among Amazon's pet products, according to One Click Retail. However, dry cat food is beginning to catch up.

The top-selling pet food on Amazon is Taste of the Wild – High Prairie Recipe dry dog food in 30-pound bags. This product meets many of the trends in dog food consumer preferences, wrote One Click Retail analysts. For example, its product description states, "A NATURAL food with added vitamins and minerals; fruits and vegetables as SUPERFOODS for natural ANTIOXIDANTS."

That Taste of the Wild dog food’s marketing met consumer demands for health and wellness by using the buzzword “superfoods” to describe nutrient-rich plants. The product was also promoted as natural dog food.
