On December 26, Gold Star Distribution Inc. announced a voluntary recall of all FDA-regulated products, which includes pet food products along with drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, dietary supplements and human food, spanning three states: Minnesota, Indiana and North Dakota
The recall follows an FDA inspection that identified insanitary conditions at the facility, including the presence of rodent excreta, rodent urine and bird droppings in areas where products were stored. The FDA determined these conditions created significant contamination risk from filth and harmful microorganisms.
Products stored under such conditions may become contaminated through contact with contaminated surfaces or exposure to airborne particulates associated with animal waste. Potential health risks include bacterial contamination, particularly Salmonella, which can cause serious illness in vulnerable populations including infants, elderly individuals, pregnant people and those with weakened immune systems.
Additionally, products contaminated with filth, rodent excreta, and rodent urine may cause illness in the animals that consume the food or humans that are in contact with the products. Rodents are the main reservoirs of Leptospira the bacteria that causes leptospirosis in humans and animals.
The recall does not apply to products shipped directly to retail or convenience stores by distributors or manufacturers, including all frozen and refrigerated items. A comprehensive list of affected products is available here.
No illnesses have been reported to date related to the recalled products.
