Travel was one of the first aspects of the pet food industry to be drastically altered by the pandemic. Pet food professionals could no longer meet in person to learn from each other, conduct business or attend conferences. Later, as ports clogged and factories lacked workers, supply chains slowed or broke down. Along with other logistical issues, transporting materials became an increasingly complicated process. Ultimately, pet owners found shortages of their desired brands in some retail locations and even online.

The maps published on Petfoodindustry.com may help professionals address some problems that sprang from movement restrictions. A neighboring pet food company could be a networking and collaboration opportunity. Suppliers of pet food ingredients and production equipment could have a potential client in the region. Shorter supply lines and local collaborators may be more stable in the ongoing pandemic and future crises that disrupt global trade.

Supply chain disruptions in the pet food industry

As the pandemic nears its second year, the pet food industry maintains a worldwide network of ingredient suppliers, equipment manufacturers and pet food producers despise logistical disruptions. Around the world, supply chain disturbances have affected pet food companies large and small, along with their suppliers. For example, J.M. Smucker profits declined 20% for its pet food segment in the second quarter of fiscal year 2022. Company executives pointed to higher commodity, manufacturing and transportation costs as the prime reasons for this decline. Facing logistics headwinds earlier this year, one pet food manufacturer too pride in overcoming the challenge.

“Supply chain disruptions are a tremendous burden,” Warren Hill, chief commercial officer for Midwestern Pet Foods said at Super Zoo in August. “We're proud at Midwestern pet foods that going back to the early days of COVID, we've maintained a 99% fill rate in all of our products. It's been very tricky. It's been very difficult to do because the supply chain disruptions are everywhere, on every type of imaginable product, and material input.”

As the pandemic and supply chain issues continue, preparation and planning may be keys to dealing with shortages and other supply problems, Judi Lazaro, senior category director of food safety at AIB International said during her presentation at Petfood Forum in September. AIB researchers have found that companies that were most prepared were two times more likely to have no significant changes in their operating costs.

“Really doing things right and doing things proactively saves not only people, facilities and the supply chain,” she said. “But it really helps with your bottom line.”
