China’s pet food industry is adapting to current events and proving nimble.

China's pet food imports in 2025 are expected to cave from the sheer weight of new higher tariff plans and the rise of competitive local alternatives.

Based on records from the General Administration of Customs China (GACC), the downward trend started last year (2024) when the total imported pet food accounted for US$499.8 million, a year-on-year decrease of 11.4%. The trend continued in the first two months of 2025 as China’s total pet food imports dipped at US$44.2 million, which was 10.4% less compared to the same period in 2024.
