Grain-free dog food alert: Many questions still to answer

The recent dilated cardiomyopathy webinar, hosted by Petfood Industry, prompted great questions regarding grain-free diets for dogs.

As a follow-up to the Petfood Industry webinar on September 4, 2018, “FDA: possible dog food link to canine dilated cardiomyopathy,” and the Petfood Industry magazine article from September 2018, “Do peas and potatoes really cause heart disease in dogs?,” many questions about grain-free ingredients warrant further discussion.

Given that potatoes in wet or dry form possess very little protein, and thereby contribute little to the overall formula as it regards to protein or amino acids, it is unlikely that they will have an impact on the nutritional balance of amino acids or their bioavailability. Of the small amount of protein they do possess, the protein quality and amino acid profile are quite good.
