Humane Society releases results of recent study

Research sheds light on a concerning national issue--pet poverty.

A recent poll conducted by the Humane Society of the United States sheds light on a concerning national issue: approximately 20 million pets in the U.S. are experiencing poverty alongside their families, with a staggering 70% never having seen a veterinarian. Despite this, only 28% of Americans are aware of this crisis, according to the survey.

The poll also reveals that 43% of pet owners have struggled to meet their pets' needs due to financial constraints. However, the majority of Americans (89%) agree that all pet owners should be able to keep their pets, and 81% believe that financial difficulties should not force pet relinquishment.

Pets are considered family members by 91% of pet owners, who are willing to make personal sacrifices to ensure their well-being. These sacrifices range from giving up luxuries to tapping into personal finances or adjusting living situations.

Recognizing the importance of supporting pets in need, 90% of Americans believe it's crucial to have resources available for pets facing economic hardship. In response to this crisis, the Humane Society of the United States has launched the More Than a Pet campaign. This initiative aims to raise awareness and provide solutions for pet owners struggling financially.

Through partnerships with organizations like TQL, Motel 6, Smalls, and Tractive, along with celebrity ambassador Jackson Galaxy, the campaign focuses on promoting equity and access to pet care resources. The campaign also includes the More Than a Pet Community Hero Award, recognizing individuals who make a difference in communities lacking pet resources.

Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, emphasizes the importance of keeping families and their pets together, highlighting the deep bond between humans and animals. Jackson Galaxy echoes this sentiment, urging people to support their neighbors and spread awareness about the crisis.

Every act of kindness, whether providing pet food or offering assistance with veterinary care, can make a significant impact in keeping families and their beloved pets together during times of financial hardship.
