IQI Trusted Petfood Ingredients has partnered exclusively with Royal Avebe to bring a potato-based protein ingredient, ProtaSTAR, to the pet food market.
According to IQI, the potato’s typical high starch and protein content sets the vegetable apart as a nutritional and functional pet food ingredient. Potatoes are also naturally rich in fiber, antioxidants, vitamin C, a series of B group vitamins, potassium, iron, magnesium and phytonutrients noted the company.
Developed by Avebe, ProtaSTAR is designed as a sustainable alternative protein source, targeting the demand for vegan and grain-free pet foods. The ingredient is produced through a specialized process that refines and purifies potato protein, enhancing its nutritional profile and digestibility.
ProtaSTAR is said to offer 80% protein content and a complete amino acid profile, making it a valuable ingredient for formulating vegetarian pet foods. The ingredient is said to offer a protein efficiency ratio and digestibility comparable to traditional animal-based proteins, like beef and chicken, but with a lower environmental impact. Its reduced glycoalkaloid content contributes to a neutral taste, enhancing palatability for pets.
Royal Avebe, a Dutch company with over a century of experience in potato-based food solutions, has a reputation for sustainable practices. The company sources its potatoes locally from Dutch and German farmers and controls the entire supply chain. Avebe's approach aligns with global sustainability goals, such as promoting responsible consumption and economic growth.
ProtaSTAR will be available across Europe through IQI in bulk and smaller packaging options, supporting co-development opportunities for new pet food formulations.
