Pet Supplies Plus and Wag N' Wash marked Earth Day 2025 by announcing a sustainability milestone: their joint recycling program with TerraCycle has collected and recycled more than 30 tons of pet food, treat and litter packaging since its launch.
The in-store program, available at participating locations, allows customers to drop off used packaging from any brand. Materials collected are processed by TerraCycle, which cleans, shreds, and repurposes the waste into raw materials for new products. The company said this initiative addresses a growing concern in the pet food industry, where most packaging is made from hard-to-recycle materials — leading to an estimated 99% ending up in landfills or oceans.
"Our partnership with TerraCycle continues to highlight our commitment to sustainability, not just on Earth Day, but year-round," said Chris Rowland, CEO of Pet Supplies Plus and Wag N' Wash. "We are proud that our neighbors have supported this commitment and contributed to the success of the program. Together, we're setting a new benchmark for environmental responsibility in the pet industry and making a lasting impact on our planet's future."
According to the company, the U.S. pet food industry generates approximately 400 million tons of plastic waste annually. The brands were the first in the pet retail sector to collaborate with TerraCycle, aiming to educate pet owners on reducing their environmental footprint.
"This program shows how accessible recycling solutions can deliver real environmental impact," said Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle. "The Pet Supplies Plus and Wag N' Wash Free Recycling Program gives pet owners a simple way to collect and recycle pet food packaging, keeping it out of landfills and incinerators—turning everyday habits into meaningful progress."
