Institute of Packaging Professionals adds pet care category to awards

The IoPP 2026 AmeriStar Awards program now accepts entries for pet food and related product packaging.

The Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) has expanded its 2026 AmeriStar Awards program to include a pet care category, marking the first time the awards have recognized packaging specifically for pet food, grooming supplies, health products, toys and other pet-related items.

The new pet care category accepts packaging for pet food and nutrition, grooming supplies, health and wellness products, hygiene items, toys and enrichment, training aids, identification and safety products. Entries are due by April 30, 2026.

The AmeriStar Awards program evaluates packaging design rather than the products inside. Entrants must select one category per submission, though the same package can be entered into multiple categories. Multiple winners may be selected per category based on judging criteria, with judges selecting one "Best in Show" winner from all entries.

IoPP displays winning entries each fall at PACK EXPO, where attendees vote for "People's Choice." Winners in all categories, along with Best in Show and People's Choice recipients, are recognized during an awards presentation on the final day of the show. Winning entries are also promoted through IoPP's newsletter, email announcements and social media platforms.

Previous pet food packaging winners include Blue Buffalo Tastefuls Spoonless Singles from General Mills and Product Ventures, a polypropylene recyclable split cup with a built-in chopper designed for portion control and flexible feeding options.
