Saudi Arabian pet food market shifts as pet dogs rise

Cats have always had a place in the Saudi pet market. However, dogs were historically less accepted as pets.

Shifting cultural perceptions of dogs and demographic trends have transformed Saudi Arabia’s pet food market, according to Giacomo Rotunno, director at NG Exhibitions, during his presentation at Zoomark 2025 in Bologna, Italy. Rising pet ownership in a wealthy economy fueled pet food market growth from US$90 million in 2020 to US$137 million in 2023. The pet population has more than tripled during that time, increasing from approximately 800,000 animals to 2.4 million.

He noted that dog ownership has been particularly influential in this growth. Cats have always had a place in the Saudi pet market. However, dogs were historically less accepted as pets for religious reasons, but as those perceptions change, a new group of dog owners has emerged. With Arabian homes opening to dogs comes a range of opportunities for brands.

“You know better than me what that means, having a new puppy in the house,” he said.

Pet food tops Saudi market

Pet food accounts for the majority of the Saudi pet sector’s revenue with 64% of the market, or about US$730 million, he said. Dry food makes up 51% of the pet food segment, while snacks and treats hold a significant 25% share. Specialized pet shops dominate distribution, handling 82% of sales. E-commerce, currently at 10%, is growing rapidly thanks to improved logistics and the rise of local online platforms.

Saudi consumers are increasingly buying premium and specialized products, including organic and health-focused pet food. Rotunno said that this shift reflects broader global trends and signals increasing maturity in the domestic market. Major regional retail chains are expanding shelf space dedicated to pet products, signaling long-term confidence in the sector’s potential.

Rotunno emphasized the economic strength behind the growing Saudi Arabian pet food market.

“This is the time to go there,” he said. “If you are an entrepreneur, if you are in this industry, have a look and you will find something.”
