French freeze-dried cat food producer expands

Sally & Cie is increasing production capacity and raising funds for further expansion; plus, European pet retail chain Fressnapf-Maxi Zoo reports strong financial results.

Sally & Cie, a French freeze-dried cat food producer based in Brittany, is expanding its production capacity and raising funds to support its double-digit annual sales growth. The company recently invested in new machinery to increase production efficiency while maintaining quality standards and sourcing raw materials locally within 30 kilometers of its plant.

France’s Sally & Cie, a producer focused on making freeze-dried food for cats, is raising funds for its further expansion. Encouraged by its increasing sales, the company recently invested in its production capacities by purchasing new machinery. 

“Thanks to this latest-generation machine, we will be able to increase our production capacity, improve efficiency and optimize our freeze-drying times, while maintaining the quality standards for which Sally & Cie is known,” the pet food maker said in a statement. 

Alongside the latest investment, Sally & Cie has also been advancing an initiative to secure funds to boosts its further growth. The company told local business magazine Le Journal Des Entreprises that it has experienced double-digit annual sales growth owing to the rising popularity of its offering of freeze-dried meat and fish that can be stored at room temperature and served directly to pets.

At this point, the pet food business did not disclose the amount of funds it aims to secure through its ongoing funding round. 

Sally & Cie said its product range is based on chicken, sardines, mackerel, quails, rabbits and duck breasts. With raw materials sourced within a radius of 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) of the company’s plant in Brest, in the country’s northwestern region of Brittany, Sally & Cie said it also places emphasis on local and sustainable sourcing.

Fressnapf-Maxi Zoo boosts revenues with new store openings

European pet retailer Fressnapf-Maxi Zoo has posted strong financial results for the second quarter of 2026, further bolstering its foothold in the company’s core markets of Germany, France and Italy despite an increasingly challenging market environment, according to the company.

In the second quarter of this year, the group generated revenue of about €930 million (US$1.07 billion), an increase of 7.1% compared with the same period of 2025, Fressnapf-Maxi Zoo said in a statement. 

At the same time, the retailer “further improved its profitability: adjusted EBITDA rose by 9.3% year-on-year to €158 million, underlining the strength of the company’s business performance and the effectiveness of continued disciplined cost management,” according to the statement. 

Due to 53 new store openings in the second quarter of this year, particularly in the  company’s key markets of France, Italy and Poland, the total number of Fressnapf-Maxi Zoo stores expanded to 2,964 outlets. Compared with 2025, the chain has grown by a total of 180 stores, as indicated by data from the business. 

“In the second quarter, we were able to build seamlessly on our dynamic start to 2026, expand market share in our core markets and further increase our profitability,” said Florian Wieser, chief financial officer. “Our robust sales growth in an increasingly challenging environment demonstrates that our strategic measures are taking effect.

“Alongside the consistent continuation of our expansion, the positive development of our like-for-like sales is particularly encouraging,” he continued. “Overall, these results reflect the resilience of our business model.”

The retailer said its pan-European expansion continues to focus on particularly attractive markets, including France, Italy and Poland, combined with the roll-out of its new, urban store format. “Furthermore, Fressnapf-Maxi Zoo will continue to optimize its online model and drive customer acquisition for its loyalty program,” according to the company. 

In the first half of 2026, Fressnapf-Maxi Zoo said it managed to report sales growth above the market average in all of its core markets. In Germany, the company “outperformed market growth with its store performance” by more than threefold, while its Arcaplanet chain in Italy grew at a pace of “more than twice the rate of the Italian market,” the statement said. Maxi Zoo France posted “growth more than seven times the market rate” in the first six months of this year.
