Revival Animal Health, based in Orange City, Iowa, U.S., is recalling its Breeder's Edge and Shelter's Choice feline milk replacers due to low levels of potassium, copper, folic acid, choline and/or pyridoxine (vitamin B6).
No illnesses resulting from use of the products have been confirmed, but Revival is investigating nine complaints of potential gastrointestinal and bone development issues.
After receiving third-party test results suggesting a possible nutrient deficiency in one lot of a feline milk replacer product, Revival conducted its own confirmatory testing on multiple lots. An independent animal nutritionist analyzed those results Aug. 12 and the findings led to Revival's decision to conduct the voluntary recall due to third-party manufacturing inconsistencies resulting in low levels of potassium, copper, folic acid, choline and/or pyridoxine.
Revival Animal Health has discontinued its relationship with the contracted manufacturer.
The recalled products were sold nationwide online and in retail pet stores in stand-up resealable bags and 12-ounce jars. The following products are impacted:

Kittens, especially neonates, are considered a vulnerable population because their organ systems are immature, they grow rapidly and they depend entirely on milk replacer for nutrition.
Deficiencies that might cause few symptoms in adult cats can be fatal or cause permanent developmental damage in kittens, the company said. Kittens fed a deficient milk replacer face compounding, multi-system risks, including anemia, neurological dysfunction, liver failure, kidney damage, skeletal disease and cardiac compromise. Because young kittens grow so quickly, clinical signs may appear within days to a few weeks, and the deficiencies can be fatal or cause permanent organ damage if not caught in time.
The recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
