Architects designed a planned Royal Canin and EUKANUBA pet food production facility to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, a certification program for ecologically conscious building design. In May 2021, builders will begin work on a Royal Canin and EUKANUBA pet food production facility in Lewisburg, Ohio, USA. Mars Petcare brands announced the US$390 million investment in a press release

The 450,000-square-foot pet food production facility will have:

  • electric car charging spaces,
  • water-sense plumbing fixtures
  • landfill-free practices in site preparation

“We are working with a LEED consulting firm to review our plans as they are developed so we can continue to improve the construction practices used and the long-term operations of our sites,” a Royal Canin representative said in an email. “We are currently working toward limiting impermeable surfaces as much as possible, using many recyclable building products sourced locally that produce a well-insulated building perimeter, natural lighting, highly efficient HVAC equipment and electric motors… “The site will have many energy monitoring systems to assure that we are maintaining our energy efficiency and developing new ways to improve efficiencies as the site progresses.”

Construction of the Royal Canin and EUKANUBA pet food production facility is set to begin in May 2021. Project leaders estimate the facility will start operations in the second half of 2023. When operational, more than 224 people may find employment in the pet food manufacturing plant. The factory will manufacture both dog and cat food product lines.
