Merrick Pet Care announced recently that the company founder, Garth Pierce Merrick, died on March 1, 2022. He was born on August 30, 1946.

Following graduating from Greeley Central High School in 1964, Garth attended Colorado State University and later, served in the National Guard. In June of 1977 he married his wife, Susie Merrick. This coming June the couple would have celebrated their 45th year anniversary.

In 1988, Garth founded Merrick Pet Care in his family kitchen in Hereford, Texas. This came after he began home-cooking food for his pets to ensure they were eating wholesome, nutritious meals. Garth used the company’s success to help others, as he had a strong passion for building community and giving back. Garth donated to ministries and organizations all over the country.

More about Merrick Pet Foods

In 2015, Merrick was purchased by Nestle Purina PetCare Co.

“I believe Nestlé Purina is the right company to take what I, along with others, have built to the next level,” said Garth Merrick, founder of Merrick Pet Foods, in a previous reporting about the purchase. “I’m proud my name will continue to be on the door as we remain committed to making the best food for the best pets ever.”

On January 11, 2018, Merrick announced it would be merging with Zuke’s Pet Nutrition. Both companies were a part of the Nestle Purina PetCare Company, but Merrick continued to operate separately from Purina.

Merrick Pet Foods announced a new campaign in 2019 – “Dogs are in Charge” – to recognize and celebrate the special ways owners express love to their pets.  A launch video included user-generated clips and content that show dogs claiming their domain and discusses high-quality ingredients in pet food.
