Ireland-based C&D Foods acquired French pet food manufacturer Continentale Nutrition after the Commercial Court of Boulogne, France approved the purchase on July 1, reported the Irish Farmers Journal. Continentale employed 358 people at two factories in France. With the acquisition, C&D now has nine factories spread across seven countries.
C&D Foods, the pet food division of ABP Group, is now the largest private label pet food manufacturer in Europe, reported European Supermarket Magazine.
Established in 1959, Continentale Nutrition focused on the production of moist cat and dog food, according to the company’s website. In 2012, the company was reorganized after financial problems. In March 2014, Continentale relaunched under the guidance of Alandia, a French fund known for taking over struggling businesses.
In July 2012, Continentale Nutrition was acquired by two investment firms as it merged with Villeneuve Petfood. In August 2013, amid reports of financial difficulty, Continentale sold two of its dry production plants to United Petfood Producers.
The purchase of Continentale Nutrition by C&D Foods reflects a recent trend towards acquisitions in the pet food industry.
