Veterinary diet purchasing directly through the veterinarian is down, but that doesn’t mean pet owners aren’t spending their money on specialty formulations for their pets.

As Packaged Facts reports in “Veterinary Services in the U.S.” (October 2023), MRI-Simmons data show the overall percentage of dog/cat households who report buying pet food through their veterinarian at 5% as of 2023, down from 8% in pre-COVID 2019. Virtually all of these purchases would be prescription pet foods, or prescription diets.
