Brazilian poultry company BRF stays in pet food industry

After entering the pet food market less than two years ago, Brazil-based BRF announced plans to sell its dog, cat and other pet food business wing in February of this year. However, BRF executives seem to have changed their minds.

After entering the pet food market less than two years ago, Brazil-based BRF announced plans to sell its dog, cat and other pet food business wing in February of this year. However, BRF executives seem to have changed their minds.

“As the third-ranked player in the pet food market in Brazil and leader in super premium natural pet feed, the Company will continue to drive growth in this segment by increasing distribution through specialized channel, strengthening brands strategy by segment and channel, consolidating integration synergies, and advancing the export expansion strategy,” Fábio Luis Mendes Mariano, chief financial and investor relations officer said in a statement to investors on Nov. 13.

History of BRF in the pet food market

In July, 2021, BRF further expanded into the pet food market following its acquisition of Hercosul, announced in June of that year. BRF’s segment specific subsidiary BRF Pet plans to acquire Paraguassu Participações and Affinity Petcare Brasil Participações, holders of 100% of the capital stock of Mogiana Alimentos. BRF is one of the world’s top poultry, compound feed and other food producers and processors.

Mogiana Alimentos has been in the pet food market for more than 46 years. Mogiana Alimentos specializes in animal nutrition products for dogs and cats. The company is headquartered in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. The pet food company operates with a strong presence in the southeast region, in addition to exporting products to countries in the Caribbean, Europe and South America. For this purpose, the company has two production units in Campinas and Bastos, Brazil.

Mogiana’s product portfolio includes superpremium Guabi Natural, Gran Plus in the high premium segment, Faro in the premium segment, in addition to the Herói and Cat Meal brands in the standard segment.
