Birdie & Louie has launched what it calls the largest donation in its company history: 2 million cans of cat food sent to shelters, rescues and food pantries across the U.S.
The donation, equivalent to 400,000 pounds of wet cat food, began shipping in March from Birdie & Louie’s headquarters in Wetumpka, Alabama, U.S. Distribution will continue throughout the summer to more than 100 animal welfare organizations nationwide.
The company, founded in 2021 by family-owned Worthy, Family of Brands, produces tuna-based formulas designed for cats with digestive or dietary sensitivities. The current donation stems from an excess of inventory that the company chose to reallocate to shelters facing rising demand and constrained resources.
“With natural disasters displacing pets, shelters overflowing, and supply chain hiccups affecting animal welfare organizations, we knew we had the chance to turn extra inventory into life-changing opportunities,” said co-founders Matt and Chas Worthy.
Shipments are being coordinated in collaboration with Best Friends Animal Society, a national nonprofit focused on making all U.S. shelters no-kill. Best Friends’ network of shelter and rescue partners will be the primary recipients of the donation.
"Birdie & Louie has been incredibly blessed with overwhelming support from pet parents and retailers alike,” the Worthy brothers said. “We couldn't think of a better way to give back than by helping pets and people in need.”
Logistics support is being provided by Eleven Logistical Enterprises to coordinate more than 100 shipments of canned food.
The company tied the initiative to National Pet Month in May to raise awareness around shelter overcrowding and to encourage pet adoption.
