NARA supports EPA proposal to increase renewable fuel targets

New Renewable Volume Obligation would expand use of rendered fats in low-carbon fuel production

The North American Renderers Association (NARA) has expressed support for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed increase to the Renewable Volume Obligation (RVO) under the Renewable Fuel Standard.

“This substantial increase in the RVO provides long-term certainty for producers,” said Kent Swisher, president and CEO of NARA. “We commend the EPA’s continued support of sustainable fuel technologies.”

Rendered animal fats and other by-products processed by NARA members are key feedstocks in the production of biodiesel and renewable diesel, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a circular economy.

“The rendering industry is proud to be part of the solution,” Swisher added. “This announcement supports American farmers, boosts rural economies, and promotes environmental stewardship — while reducing our nation’s dependence on petroleum-based fuels.”

NARA said it will continue working with the EPA, USDA, and industry stakeholders to support a stable market for renewable fuels and their feedstocks.
