The 2026 Special Olympics USA Games announced Champ, a golden retriever therapy dog, as its official mascot and ambassador for the competition taking place June 20-26, 2026, in Minnesota.
Champ becomes the first live mascot in Special Olympics USA Games history. The therapy dog will provide emotional support to athletes and promote inclusion throughout the event and leading up to the Games.
"We're incredibly proud to introduce Champ as the first live mascot in the history of the Special Olympics USA Games," said Christy Sovereign, CEO of the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games. "Dogs have a unique way of connecting with people, meeting them without judgment and leading with heart. That's exactly the kind of energy we want to carry into the 2026 USA Games. Champ symbolizes our mission to champion one another, on and off the field, regardless of ability."
Champ comes from North Star Therapy Animals of Pet Partners, a Twin Cities therapy animal organization. The dog made her debut at the Minnesota State Fair Parade this month.
As a registered therapy dog, Champ will appear at community events and athlete engagements before the Games. During the competition, she will provide emotional support at sporting venues and partner activations, including UnitedHealthcare's sensory spaces on the University of Minnesota campus.
The 2026 Special Olympics USA Games will host more than 3,000 athletes, 1,500 coaches, 10,000 volunteers and thousands of spectators. Athletes will compete in 16 sports at venues including the University of Minnesota and the National Sports Center in Blaine.
